How to create a dynamic QR code

Three steps from blank canvas to a printed code you can still change tomorrow.

  1. Design the code

Pick a content type such as URL, vCard, Wi-Fi or event, then choose dot and eye shapes, colors, a logo and an optional frame. The preview updates as you type.

  2. Make it dynamic

Sign in with a free account and save. The code receives a short link, so the printed pattern stays the same while the destination can change at any time.

  3. Download, print and track

Export PNG, SVG, JPEG or WebP, print it, and watch scans arrive by time, device, operating system and country. Edit the destination whenever you need to.

Everything a paid QR platform does, without the plan

Dynamic links, analytics, branding, bio pages and bulk generation in one Material Design 3 studio.

Dynamic QR codes you can edit after printing

Each dynamic code points to a short link on this site. Change the destination, pause it, add UTM tags or set an expiry date, and every printed copy follows. Choose a custom alias to keep links readable.

Scan analytics

Total and unique scans, a daily or hourly timeline, and breakdowns by operating system, device, browser, country and city. Export everything as CSV.

Branded design

Six dot shapes, three eye styles, solid or gradient colors, a centred logo and call-to-action frames such as "Scan me".

Link-in-bio pages

A mobile-first page with your photo, buttons, socials and a "Save contact" vCard, hosted here at its own address and ready for a QR code.

Bulk QR codes from CSV

Upload a spreadsheet with up to 500 rows, apply one design, and download a ZIP with one image per row. Signed-in users get a dynamic link per row.

Smart routing by operating system

Send iPhone scanners to the App Store, Android scanners to Google Play and everyone else to a fallback page, from one printed code.

Eleven content types

Not just links. Generate a Wi-Fi QR code that joins a network on scan, a vCard contact card, a calendar event, or a text, email, SMS, phone or map location code.

Where dynamic QR codes earn their keep

Anything you print once and change often is a job for a dynamic code.

QR code for a restaurant menu

Print one code per table. Update the PDF or menu page whenever prices change; the code on the table never has to be replaced.

vCard QR code for business cards

A scan saves your contact details to the phone. Point it at a bio page instead and update your number or role without reprinting cards.

Events and tickets

Posters link to registration, then to the schedule, then to the recording. One code, three phases, and a scan timeline showing which posters worked.

Product packaging

Link to instructions, warranty registration or a reorder page. Bulk-generate a code per SKU from a CSV and compare scans by product.

Marketing campaigns

Give each flyer, billboard and ad its own code with UTM tags. Analytics show scans by placement, city and time of day, so budget follows results.

Real estate signs

A code on the yard sign opens the listing, the virtual tour or a contact page. When the property sells, point the same sign at your next listing.

Why is it free?

QRCraft Studio is supported by a small number of ads on public pages and in the app. That is the whole business model, so there is nothing to upsell.

  • No watermark on any download, in any format or size.
  • No expiring codes. Static codes work forever; dynamic codes stay live as long as your account does.
  • No credit card, no trial countdown, no "Pro" features.
  • Your data is yours: hashed IPs, CSV export and one-click account deletion.

QR code best practices: size, contrast, error correction and testing

A QR code is a grid of small squares (modules) that a phone camera decodes into text. Most failed scans come from four avoidable causes: the code is printed too small, the contrast is too low, the quiet zone is missing, or nobody tested it before the print run. Here is how to get each one right.

How big should a QR code be?

A useful rule of thumb is that the code should be at least one tenth of the scanning distance wide. A code on a flyer read from 30 cm away should be 3 cm across; a poster read from 2 m needs a code around 20 cm wide. The absolute minimum for close-range scanning on a business card or label is about 2 cm (0.8 in), assuming a short link.

Content length matters as much as physical size. Every extra character adds modules, and denser modules need more space to stay readable. A 200-character vCard produces a far denser grid than a 30-character short link. This is a practical reason to prefer dynamic codes for print: the short link keeps the code sparse, so it can be printed smaller and scans faster.

Contrast and color

Scanners look for dark modules on a light background. Keep the foreground clearly darker than the background, with a contrast ratio of at least 3:1 and ideally 4.5:1 or more. Dark rose, navy or charcoal on white all scan well; pale pastels on white, or light modules on a dark background, often do not. Gradients are fine as long as the lightest stop is still clearly dark.

Leave a quiet zone: an empty margin of at least four modules around the code. Many decorative frames sit outside this margin, which is why the frames in QRCraft Studio add their own padding instead of overlapping it.

Error correction levels explained

QR codes include redundant data so they still decode when part of the pattern is damaged or covered. There are four levels:

  • L recovers up to 7% of the code. Smallest pattern, best for clean digital use.
  • M recovers up to 15%. A good default for print.
  • Q recovers up to 25%. Use for outdoor signage or rough handling.
  • H recovers up to 30%. Required when a logo covers the centre of the code.

Higher levels add modules, so pair them with a shorter payload. When you add a logo, the studio raises the level to H automatically and hides the modules behind the logo; keep the logo at or under 30% of the code area to stay within that budget.

Test before you print

  1. Scan a printed proof, not just the screen. Paper, ink and lamination change contrast.
  2. Test with both an iPhone camera and an Android camera, plus at least one third-party scanner app.
  3. Try it at the real distance and in the real lighting, including glare and low light.
  4. Open the destination on a phone. A code that scans but lands on a desktop-only page still fails.
  5. For dynamic codes, confirm the short link resolves and check the first scans in analytics after launch.

Static or dynamic: which should you choose?

Choose a static code when the content will never change and no tracking is needed, for example a Wi-Fi password card or a one-off document link. Choose a dynamic code for anything printed in quantity, anything with a campaign behind it, or anything whose destination might move. The printed pattern stays fixed while the destination, the routing rules and the expiry date remain under your control, and every scan is counted.

Frequently asked questions

Is QRCraft Studio really free?

Yes. Every feature is free: static and dynamic QR codes, scan analytics, bio pages and bulk generation. There are no plans, trials or upgrade prompts. The service is supported by unobtrusive ads on the public pages and in the app.

What is the difference between a static and a dynamic QR code?

A static QR code encodes your content directly, so it cannot be changed after it is created. A dynamic QR code encodes a short link that redirects to your content, so you can change the destination at any time and see how often it is scanned. Static codes need no account; dynamic codes need a free account.

Can I edit a QR code after it has been printed?

Yes, if it is a dynamic QR code. The printed pattern points to a short link; change the link's destination in your dashboard and every existing print starts sending people to the new page immediately. Static codes cannot be edited.

Do the QR codes expire?

No. Static codes are plain images and work forever. Dynamic codes stay active as long as your account exists; there is no time limit or scan limit. You can optionally set your own expiry date on a link.

Do I need an account to create a QR code?

No account is needed to design and download a static QR code from this page. A free account is required for dynamic codes, scan analytics, bio pages and bulk generation, because those need somewhere to store your links.

What can I track with scan analytics?

For each dynamic code you can see total and unique scans, a timeline by day or hour, and breakdowns by operating system, device type, browser, country, region and city, plus hour of day and weekday. Data can be exported as CSV. IP addresses are hashed and never stored in raw form.

Can I add a logo to my QR code?

Yes. Upload a PNG, JPG or SVG logo and it is placed in the centre of the code. Error correction is raised to level H automatically so the code stays scannable. Keep the logo at or below 30% of the code area.

Which file formats can I download?

PNG, SVG, JPEG and WebP. Use SVG for print, signage and anything that will be resized; use PNG for websites, documents and social media.

What types of QR codes can I create?

Website URL, vCard contact card, Wi-Fi network, plain text, email, SMS, phone number, geo location, calendar event, smart routing (different destinations for iOS and Android) and link-in-bio pages.

How does bulk QR code generation from CSV work?

Upload a CSV with a title and URL per row (up to 500 rows per run), pick one design for all codes, and download a ZIP with one image per row. If you are signed in, each row can also become a dynamic link with its own analytics.

What is a link-in-bio page and how does it work with a QR code?

A bio page is a small mobile-friendly landing page with your name, photo, buttons and social links, hosted on this site at its own address. Point a QR code at it to give people one scannable destination for everything, for example on a business card or shop window.

Is my data private? Do you sell scan data?

Scan data belongs to you and is never sold. We store a salted hash of the scanner's IP address, never the raw address, along with coarse location and device information. You can delete a link, or your whole account and everything in it, at any time. See the privacy policy for details.
